DENTAL IMPLANTS

Implants Help Preserve Bone in the Jaw

Traditional procedures pose risks of complications, whereas implants promote overall oral and jaw health. The presence of natural teeth or implants helps to preserve the jaw bone. An extracted or lost tooth can cause the bone to weaken or erode. Once placed, successful implants provide stability and work to maintain jaw health just as natural teeth do.

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are made of titanium. Since the body accepts this type of metal, the implants will simply fuse tightly to your jaw bone and work the way natural teeth would.

The abutment is the component that sticks up though your gums so the crown has a place to sit.

The crown is the visible component of dental implants – the part that looks and functions like an actual tooth and sits on the abutment.

IF YOU HAVE MISSING TEETH, DR. AHMAD ESLAMI
CAN RESTORE YOUR SMILE WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS.

The cause of missing teeth is frequently the result of untreated gum disease, tooth decay and injuries. As many as 70 percent of adults are missing a tooth by age 44 and more than 25 percent of adults are missing all of their teeth by age 74.

Dental implants with specialist Dr. Eslami are an excellent alternative to traditional tooth replacement options. These options include fixed bridges, partial or full dentures for replacing missing teeth. Bridge and partial dentures use existing teeth for support. Full denture sits on the gum and bone. However, all of these options have unintended consequences as follows:

  • Fixed bridges use the adjacent teeth. These teeth are called "abutments". They have to be ground down in order to support the bridge. This will compromise prognosis of the these teeth.

  • Partial dentures have a framework that sit on the gum. They also use metallic retentive hooks to grab onto the existing teeth for stability and support. These hooks apply lateral forces on the supporting teeth and gradually compromise their integrity.

  • Full dentures sit on the gum and underlying bone. They affect taste (by covering the all the gums and palate/roof of the mouth), and their chewing power is far less than natural teeth.

  • Jaw bone is designed to hold teeth. Once teeth are lost bone gradually dissolves away. Dentures and bridges will increase rate of bone loss. Muscles in the face can begin to droop, giving dentures a loose, poor fit.

  • As bone is lost, dentures loose their tight fit and often result in clicking sounds when patients eat or speak, which can be embarrassing.

They are made of body-friendly (biocompatible) titanium and do not decay. Dental implants are great for missing teeth because they fuse with the jaw bone (osseointegration) to function just like human teeth. Dental implants also have an excellent success rate and they last for decades. Patients looking to replace or reinforce old dentures or replace old bridges should also consider dental implants.

Dr. Eslami is a dental implant surgeon trained in multiple implant systems. He has offices on the East and West Side of Greater Milwaukee (West Allis and Glendale).
